Dennis Smith developed an interest in real estate shortly after graduating from high school in Madison, Wisconsin. While exploring investment homes with his father, he received a letter from his uncle offering him a job reporting for duty at the 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego. That uncle was none other than Uncle Sam. After serving 5½ years in the U.S. Navy, Dennis received an Honorable Discharge.

Recognizing the value of real estate and the beauty of the San Diego area, Dennis purchased his first home in 1972 for $17,900. With little knowledge of the real estate process, he relied on his agent for guidance. After viewing three homes that met his needs, he simply said, “I’ll take that one.” As a 24-year-old single sailor living on a ship, Dennis had no furniture but that didn’t stop him. In one weekend, he completely furnished his new home using newspaper ads, garage sales, and estate sales, hauling everything in his VW van with a sunroof.
